The New York Liberty win their first WNBA title in franchise history, beating the Minnesota Lynx 67-62 in overtime on Sunday at the Barclays Center.
The other Liberty players had to step up, as Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu struggled on offense. Nyara Sabally had 13 points off the bench.
Jonquel Jones scored 17 points to lead New York. She was named MVP of the Finals.
Minnesota Lynx’s Napheesa Collier scored 22 points to lead the Lynx before she fouled out of the game with 13 seconds left in overtime.
The Lynx was trying for a record fifth WNBA title, breaking a tie with the Seattle Storm and Houston Comets. Minnesota had won four titles from 2011-17 behind a core group of Lindsay Whalen, Seimone Augustus, Rebekkah Benson, Sylvia Fowles, and Maya Moore. That was the team’s last appearance in the WNBA Finals until this year.
Congratulations to New York Liberty, which won its first WNBA Title in franchise history. It took them 28 years.
