Folarin Balogun was dominant in the first half and put the U.S ahead 1-0 in the 45th minute. Then, in the second half, he was given a red card and was sent off for the rest of the game. When a player is given a red card, they are not only out of the game but also suspended for one game.
Mailk Tillman put the U.S. up 2-0 in the 82nd minute off a free-kick just outside the box.
Balogun had matched with Landon Donovan in 2010 for the most goals by an American in a single World Cup, trailing only Bert Patenaude’s four in 1930.
The U.S. will now play Belgium in the Round of 16 on Monday in Seattle.
