The Americans went up 2-0 in the first half, thanks to an own goal by Australia’s Cameron Burgess in the 11th minute, and then Alex Freeman, 21 years old, scored his first World Cup goal in the 43rd minute.

With the win over Australia on Friday afternoon, they not only clinched a spot in the knockout round but also won their group.

Australia had so many chances but couldn’t get anything going.

As the Group D winners, they will play a round-of-32 match on July 1st in Santa Clara, California, against a third-place group finisher.

The US has won back-to-back games at the World Cup for the first time since 1930.

They won the game without their star midfielder, Christian Pulisic, who missed the game with a calf injury.
