Maple Leafs sign their star center Auston Matthews to big extension

The Toronto Maple Leafs signed Auston Matthews, one of the best centers in the league, to a 4-year, $53 million extension on Wednesday, which ties him with the team through the 2027-28 season.

The deal will carry an average annual value of $13.25 million, making Matthews the highest-paid player beginning in 2024-25, surpassing Nathan Mackinnon’s $12.6 AAV.

On his current contract, Matthews had one year left, a five-year $58.2 million pact he signed in February 2019. He would have walked into unrestricted free agency next summer.

In the 2022-23 season, he had 40 goals for 85 points in 74 games.

Matthews is one of my favorite centers in the league. He is in my top 10 best centers list. Now that he is staying in Toronto, I think he will score more goals this season and help Toronto in the playoffs.
