March Madness is coming

Here we are, a year later, and March Madness is back for the first time since the start of the pandemic. The tournament was cancelled completely, which was a terrible, unexpected thing. Some seniors never got the chance to play in the big tournament as a result. But now, the tournament is back and scheduled to be played in arenas throughout Indiana. The long-awaited games will begin Friday, March 19th. Who’s playing who, you ask? We’ll find out on Sunday, March 14th during the Selection Show on CBS and the Bracketology Special on ESPN.

Although we don’t technically know which teams will participate in March Madness, we can make some pretty good guesses based on historical selection in years prior. So far, those who’ve already punched the ticket to the tournament are Morehead State, Winthrop, Liberty, Loyola Chicago, UNCG, Appalachian State, Cleveland State, Mount St. Mary’s, Drexel, Gonzaga, and Oral Roberts. Based on previous performances, here are a few teams we should be keeping an eye on: Gonzaga, Baylor, Villanova, Iowa, and Michigan.

Since there are also so many good players in college basketball, I had to narrow it down to those with the best performances throughout this season. Corey Kispert, Jalen Suggs, and Drew Timme have stood out among their teammates on Gonzaga. And, Luke Garza has presented as the best player on the Iowa Hawkeyes. Who do you think will stand out this year?

I hope all of you are just as excited to watch March Madness, as I am. I want to thank all of you who’ve been following The Sports Update each week. We’ll be off for Spring break next week and looking forward to filling you in on the start of the March Madness tournament when we return on Wednesday, March 24th.
