On Friday, December 20th, the College Football Playoff's first-round game started with a bang. Riley Leonard led the way for Notre Dame and beat the Indiana Hoosiers 27-17. They will now face off against Georgia in the quarterfinals and play in the Sugar Bowl on New Year's Day. On Saturday, December 21st, Jaydon Blue had his best game of the season for Texas. He ran for 146 yards and two touchdowns, one of them a 77-yarder in the fourth quarter. Texas beat Cade Klubnik and the Clemson Tigers 38-24. They advance to play the Big 12 Champions, Arizona State, in the quarterfinals and will play in the Peach Bowl. Drew Allar and the Penn State Nittany Lions dominated SMU from start to finish, won 38-10 on Saturday, and advanced to the quarterfinals. They will play Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl on New Year's Eve. Will Howard threw two touchdown passes to freshman Jeremiah Smith as Ohio State routed Tennessee 42-17 on Saturday night. Buckeyes running backs Quinshon Judkins and TreYeyon Henderson rushed for two touchdowns apiece. Howard finished 24 of 29 for 311 yards, his second 300-yard game. They advance to the quarterfinals and will play the Oregon Ducks in the Rose Bowl Game on New Year's Day.
On Saturday night, the Boston Bruins returned to the win column and beat the Buffalo Sabres 3-1. Charlie Coyle scored a first-period goal (8th), giving Boston a 1-0. Morgan Geekie scored the go-ahead goal in the 3rd period (7th) on the power-play, giving the Bruins a 2-1 lead. Brad Marchand finished it with an empty-net goal (14th), securing the win. Also, the Boston Celtics won 123-98 on Saturday night over the Chicago Bulls. Jayson Tatum led the way with 43 points, ten assists, and 16 rebounds for this third career triple-double. Kristaps Porzingis scored 22 points, and Jaylen Brown added 19.
