USA won 4-3 on penalty kicks in the Gold Cup quarterfinals against Costa Rica

USA Men’s soccer won on penalty kicks against Costa Rica 4-3 to advance to the Gold Cup Semi-finals on Wednesday against Guatemala in St. Louis.
Francisco Calvo got Costa Rica on the board first in the 12th minute to go up 1-0. Then, in the 43rd minute, USA tied it at 1-1before halftime on a goal by Diego Luna, his first international goal.
Max Arfsten scored his first international goal in the 46th minute of the second half to give the U.S. the lead at 2-1.
Costa Rica tied it in the 71st minute on a goal by Alonso Martinez.
The game was tied going into a penalty shootout. The U.S. won 4-3 on the game-winning PK scored by Damion Downs in the sixth round of the penalty shootout.
U.S. goalkeeper Matt Freese was just fantastic, especially in the penalty shootout, coming up with some huge saves when his team needed it the most.
